What Church means to me.
Nehemiah wrote 2700 years ago: “The joy of the Lord is your strength”. C.S. Lewis in his autobiography wrote about how after spending half his life as an atheist, he was “Surprised by Joy”, which is also the title of his book. Society’s message is that we will be happy when we get the bigger car, the bigger house, etc. This had the ring of truth when I was young; however, I now realize that this is the great lie. Joy is different than happiness; it comes when it shouldn’t and surprises us. Church is where I am often suprised by joy. It comes even though the church isn’t perfect, and even though the church people aren’t perfect. Joy doesn’t wait until things are perfect. To Nehemiah, C.S. Lewis, and me, Church means joy. - Bill.
